The CHS Mustang Robotics Team competed this weekend in the West Texas BEST Robotics competition at Estacado High School. As is usually the case, it was a crazy day of competition. The team struggled through several technical difficulties in the morning rounds, many of them problems we had not encountered before, and were having a hard time finding any points. They were not able to advance to semi finals on points, but because they had a good team notebook score, they won a spot in the wildcard round! When the wildcard round took place, CHS won the round and was advanced to semis in the afternoon!
The team did better in semis than in the morning rounds and managed to score and stay near the top of the pack. Because of the team’s perseverance, they finished 5th overall in the robot competition! This is a big improvement over last year’s 11th place finish. We also beat out the other three LISD high schools in the competition today.
This year’s team also competed in what is called the BEST award. Teams are judged on their team notebook, table display, oral presentation, and school spirit. All of this, plus building the robot is an incredible amount of work for 6 weeks time and 11 team members. They did a great job with their table display, but even better was their oral presentation. They won the award for the BEST oral presentation! The judges commented at the end of the presentation that it was one of the best presentations they had seen in their 7 years of judging. The presentation is based on the explanation of the design and build process of the robot and how they promoted robotics and engineering in the school and community. The kids really worked hard in so many ways and their hard work paid off! They are competitive against many teams that are more than twice their numbers and experience.
